Noted Bengali actress Ruma Guha Thakurta dies in Kolkata


Noted Bengali actress and Kishore Kumar’s first wife Ruma Guha Thakurta passes away in Kolkata at the age of 84. Ruma was suffering from old age-related diseases. She is best known for her role in Satyajit Ray’s ‘Ganashatru’ (1989) and Abhijan’(1962). She breathed her last today at her Ballygunge residence. The funeral took place in Kolkata today evening.

Born in Kolkata in 1934, Ruma Guha Thakurta was married to Kishore Kumar from 1950 to 1960. Singer and composer Amit Kumar is their son. After her divorce from Kishore Kumar, she married Arup Guha Thakurta, with whom she has daughter Sromona Guha Thakurta, also a singer and son Ayan Guha Thakurta. Ruma Guha Thakurta founded the Calcutta Youth Choir in 1958.

“Dada (Amit) is coming here this evening. He will be taking all the decisions (about her last rites),” Ayan said.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee mourned the death of the renowned Bengali actress. She wrote on Twitter: "Saddened at the passing away of Ruma Guha Thakurta. Her contribution to the field of cinema and music will always be remembered. My condolences to her family and her admirers."
