Neeraj Pandey’s ‘Toilet - Ek Prem Katha’ to address menace of open defecation

Filmmakers Neeraj Pandey of ‘A Wednesday’ fame and Shital Bhatia of Friday Filmworks have collaborated for a film to highlight the social issue of open defecation which is a major reason behind health problems and crimes against women.

Vikram Malhotra of Abundantia Entertainment , who had joined the duo for the widely acclaimed thriller ‘Baby’ will also collaborate with them for the satirical comedy film titled ‘Toilet: Ek Prem Katha’.

The film is a fun love story which brings to the limelight the lack of proper toilet facilities. Women especially in the rural areas are compelled to relieve themselves in the open because of this problem.

“The one line of this film is simple, 'Log pyaar mein apni biwi ke liye Taj Mahal banwate hain, yeh kahani uss aadmi ki hai jisne apni biwi ke liye toilet banwaya!’ (Roughly translated ‘this story is about a man who makes a toilet for his wife as the symbol of love like the Taj Mahal’),” Producer Shital told The Times of India.

Vikram added, "Rarely do you come across a concept and a script that has a social message woven into it in such an entertaining manner. The story of this film is funny, heart-warming and hugely impactful. It's the kind of movie that today's youth will easily relate to."

This story is also about a broad-minded girl, who, along with other women, attempts to bring about a social change and give women their dignity. It is a love story in a never-seen-before setting.

The film is inspired by real events and tries to highlight the grave issue that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has addressed in ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan'.

‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela: Ram-Leela’ writer duo Garima-Siddhartha will write the script for the film. To give it an authentic look, the film will be shot on real locations and will start rolling later this year.
