Nawazuddin’s Ramleela act cancelled after protests by Shiv Sena

Acclaimed Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui was all set to perform at a Ramleela show in his home town Muzaffarnagar in UP, but the show had to be cancelled at the last moment due to opposition by some political activists.

Nawazuddin was to play the role of Mareech in the programme and had also rehearsed for hours for his part, the actor told a daily on Wednesday. In Ramayana, Mareech is a demon, who takes the form of a beautiful golden deer who lures Ram away into the jungle, so that Ravana can kidnap Sita.

The organisers has wanted him to play the part, and the actor was excited about it, saying Ramleela has fascinated him since he was a child.

The organisers of the Ramleela programme at Budhana town featuring the ‘Freaky Ali’ actor, had had to call off the show after after the activists approached them and expressed their displeasure over Nawazuddin's participation, Superintendent of Police (rural) Rakesh Jolly said.

As per ABP News, the activists in question were from the Shiv Sena. The local unit of the political party protested due to the charges of harassment and torture against the actor filed by his sister-in-law. Wife of Nawazuddin’s younger brother Minauzzidin, recently registered a police complaint alleging that the actor and her in-laws were torturing her for dowry.
