Nagarjuna condemns actor Chalapathi Rao’s sexist remark

Telugu actor-producer Akkineni Nagarjuna has slammed senior actor Chalapathi Rao for his derogatory comment against women during a programme on upcoming film ‘Rarandoi Veduka Chuddam’. The movie stars Nagarjuna’s son Naga Chaitanya, Rakul Preet Singh, who also condemned Rao’s comment.

In the movie, there is a dialogue by the lead actor which means ‘girls are injurious to mental peace’. When Rao was asked for his take on the dialogue, he said ‘girls are not harmful but they are useful in bed’. The senior actor is facing flak from people and celebrities alike.

Nagarjuna, who is the producer of the movie, took to Twitter and distanced himself from Rao’s remark. He wrote, “I always respect women personally and in my films/I definitely do not agree with Chalapati Rao’s derogatory comments/dinosaurs do not exist!!”

Naga Chaitanya also clarified his stance and tweeted, “Respecting women is a way of life for me. The reactions shown on TV weren’t for the statement made. Do I agree with it? Absolutely NOT!”

The leading lady Rakul apologised for not reacting immediately as she failed to understand the language properly. She tweeted, “Apologies 4 a late response 2 #ChalapathiRao comments! wish I understood d exact meanin of it then. I condemn it n my off stmnt wil b out soon.” She later posted her statement on the micro-blogging site.

Earlier, Telugu comedian-actor Ali also made misogynistic remarks about popular actress Anushka Shetty during the launch of her film ‘Size Zero’ in November 2015. He called the ‘Baahubali’ actress a “hot Jalebi who everybody likes to eat,” and that she has “remarkable thighs.”

The same actor had also commented about actor Samantha's midriff in 2014, during the audio success meet of Telugu film ‘S/O Sathyamurthy’.

Meanwhile, ‘Rarandoi Veduka Chuddam’, written and directed by Kalyan Krishna, also stars Jagapathi Babu, Sampath Raj, Vennela Kishore, Raghu Babu and others, and is slated to release on May 26.
