Monica Bedi’s ex and gangster Abu Salem gets life imprisonment

Underworld goon and former Bollywood actress Monica Bedi’s ex-boyfriend Abu Salem has been sentenced to life. The special Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act pronounced the verdict today. Abu along with four others were convicted in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, which killed over 250 people.

Abu Salem and Monica Bedi were in a serious relationship and the gangster even claimed that he was married to Monica in a mosque in Los Angeles in November 2000 but the actress was always in denial mode.

Abu earlier stated that he is really upset as he is not able to communicate with her since his arrest in Arthur Road jail.

Salem even claimed that he loves her very much and never caused any hindrance in her career but now if Monica is feeling the burden of their relationship then he will willingly give her divorce and allow her to move out of his life. Monika's happiness is his first priority and he would free her if their marriage is creating any sort of problem in her profession. Salem said that he found "peace, solace and comfort in reading Bedi’s letters and cards sent to him on marriage anniversaries in loneliness of the prison."

However, the court said that if Bedi did not want a divorce from Salem she should "clarify her marital status’" to the press and put all controversy to rest so that Salem could "concentrate upon his defense in the ongoing trial."

In an interview with Showtime, Monica revealed that her first interaction with Abu Salem was over the phone, in 1998, she said, "I began getting friendly with him over the phone. At that time, he gave me a different name. I didn't know he was Abu Salem. Actually, even if he had told me he was Abu Salem, I would've had no clue. I had only heard about Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Shakeel. I'd never heard of Abu Salem," she said.

Monica and Abu were very serious about each other and wanted to start a new life together. "We went to America; we both had never been there earlier. We thought we'd start all over again. His idea was to start organising shows over there legitimately. That was his dream. Believe me he was working really hard at it. He tried his best. But his past was something he couldn't erase and it always caught up with him," she told Showtime.

Monica revealed in an interview that her parents found out about her relationship with Abu only once they got arrested. "They live in Norway; they are totally disconnected from this part of the world. It was a major shock for them. They knew I was seeing some guy but I'd lied to them. I had told them that my boyfriend was from America; his name was Sanjay and that he was a show organiser. They kept asking to meet him but I would keep pushing that off," she said.

When Abu reportedly married a Mumbai-based woman, his relationship with Monica came to an end. "I'm happy for him and I wish him all the best in life. I still respect our relationship, but he's moved on and so have I," she said.
