Mira Rajput opens up on her ‘housewife & motherhood’ controversy

Shahid Kapoor’s wife Mira Rajput earned the ire of working moms when she expressed her views on motherhood and being a wife, at an event on the occasion of Women’s Day. Mira had said, “I wouldn't want to spend one hour a day with my child and rush off to work. Why did I have her (daughter Misha)? She is not a puppy, you know. I want to be there for her as a mother.”

Mira was severely criticised by many working mothers. While hubby Shahid defended his wife saying that her comments were on a personal level, Mira had maintained silence on the controversy. Now, in a recent interview with Bombay Times, the star wife has clarified her stance saying that she was just speaking her mind.

"I was just speaking my mind. My intention was not to offend or hurt anyone. Could I have chosen my words better? Maybe. But I am not a seasoned actor and I don't know how to be politically correct,” she said.

Mira added that women who stay at home and take care of their children need to be celebrated. She said, “I was speaking for a section of women who aren’t given their due. Women who stay at home and take care of the children or work from home deserve to be celebrated as much.”

Mira opined that everyone is entitled to an opinion, but one should not force that opinion down one’s throat. She said that she wasn’t being insensitive to working women. “My intention was not to belittle working women, but I don’t want homemakers belittled either,” Mira added.

When asked if she should be a little cautious about her statements or comments made in public, Mira said, “I am not an actor or a public figure, I have the luxury to be politically incorrect.”
