‘Mary Kom’ grosses more than 30 crore in first four days

After months of anticipation, the Priyanka Chopra starrer biopic ‘Mary Kom’ finally reached the theaters on 5th September. Priyanka Chopra has spent last few months promoting the film heavily and it looks like her efforts are paying off. The film grossed over 27 crore during the weekend and although there was decline in business on Monday, the total collection has crossed Rs. 31 crore.

On its opening day Friday, the film had grossed Rs, 8.02 crore. It was followed by 9.2 crore on Saturday and 10 crore on Sunday. The film has been given tax-free status in several states like Maharashtra and UP but reportedly failed to take the full advantage of it.  Amod Mehra, the trade analyst, blamed exhibitors for this problem and said, "'Mary Kom' could've done even better if the audiences could actually avail of the tax benefits. That said, 'Queen' took two weeks to cross this mark and 'Mary Kom' has already collected this sum in its first four days. Mary Kom's first four-day collection is almost equal to that of 'Bhaag Milkha Bhaag'."

However exhibitors have so far denied such allegations. The film has done well in states like Maharashtra, Delhi, UP, West Bengal and Punjab. It is also running to packed houses in Assam and in Meghalaya. Even in south India the film did well in multiplexes.

After doing great business till Sunday, the film hit a rough patch on Monday with collections only amounting to 3.75 crore. As per estimates the numbers dropped 55 % from Friday. However the makers are confident that it will continue to do good as the audience has liked the film.

Ajit Andhare, COO of Viacom18 Motion Pictures that has co-produced the film, told the media, "Mary Kom has delivered a strong opening day and set a new first day benchmark for heroine-centric films. The word of mouth is positive and Priyanka's standout performance has touched a chord with audiences across sections."

The film’s lead star Priyanka Chopra also thanked audiences  for the good box office run of the film. She tweeted, "What a weekend for #MaryKom . Thank you all.. I truly home that the story of our true champ @MangteC has a wonderful run at the box office,”… "Thank you for the incredible response to #MaryKom I guess this film was such a heart wrenching experience that the love is just overwhelming."

It remains to be seen how the film does in the upcoming weeks as it will be pitted against ‘Finding Fanny’ and ‘Creature 3D’.
