Manoj Bajpai wins Dadasaheb Phalke Award for ‘Aligarh’; Bollywood congratulates

Acclaimed actor Manoj Bajpai, who celebrates his 47 birthday on Saturday, April 23, will be bestowed with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his performance in ‘Aligarh’. He will receive the honour in the Best Actor (Critics’ Choice) category.

Bajpai played the role of Dr Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras, a professor of Marathi Literature in Aligarh Muslim University, who was sacked from his job on charges of homosexuality, in the biographical drama by Hansal Mehta.

The recipient of two National Film Awards mentioned that he was extremely honoured and thanked everyone. "Thank you for your tremendous appreciation and love. Feeling extremely honoured," Bajpai tweeted.

‘Aligarh’ director Hansal Mehta also announced the news on Twitter on Friday night writing, “Dadasaheb Phalke Award in the Best Actor (Critics’ Choice) to Manoj Bajpayee for his portrayal of Professor Ramchandra Siras in Aligarh.” He also wished Bajpai on his birthday and posted, “Happy Birthday to one of my closest friends since over 22 years. Love you Manoj Bajpayee. Thank you for Prof Siras.”

The award function will be hosted in Mumbai on Sunday, April 24.

Bajpai, who debuted with a one-minute role in ‘Drohkaal’, was a part of several critically and commercially successful films like ‘Shool’, ‘Satya’, ‘Pinjar’, ‘Zubeidaa’, ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ etc. He will be next seen as a traffic constable in the upcoming film ‘Traffic.

Following the announcement, Bajpai’s friends and well-wishers from the industry took to Twitter to congratulate him and also wished him on his birthday.

Filmmaker-choreographer Farah Khan wrote, “And to my good friend and neighbour Manoj Bajpayee for winning Dadasaheb Phalke award! It’s raining accolades… Also, Happy Birthday!”

Farah’s husband Shirish Kunder posted, “Congratulations on the Dadasaheb Phalke award, @BajpayeeManoj! I always knew our Short Film will be lucky for you.”

‘Masaan’ actor Vicky Kaushal tweeted, “Happy Birthday Manoj Bajpayee sir and many congratulations on winning the Dadasaheb Phalke Award!”

Actor Sonu Sood tweeted, “@BajpayeeManoj Congrats my bro...Bahut Gajab kar diyo Ho bhaiya!!”
