Manisha Koirala to play Sanjay Dutt’s mother Nargis in his biopic
Manisha Koirala has joined the cast of Rajkumar Hirani’s much anticipated biopic on actor Sanjay Dutt, starring Ranbir Kapoor. The popular actress of the 1990s will portray the character of Dutt’s mother, iconic actress Nargis Dutt, in the film.
The biopic will also mark the Bollywood comeback of Manisha, who was last seen in Ram Gopal Varma’s 2012 film ‘Bhoot Returns’.
Director Hirani confirmed this to a popular publication and said, “Yes, Manisha is playing Nargis ji. She is a wonderful person, extremely sweet.”
“We were thinking of many actresses. And while Manisha is really pretty and a fantastic actress, my primary reason for taking her is that she is a cancer survivor and having been through the journey herself, can identify with Nargis ji’s fight with the disease. When we met, she told me a little about her journey,” the ‘PK’ maker further told Mumbai Mirror, giving his reasons for casting the ‘1942: A Love Story’ actress for the role.
Manisha has previously played Sanjay Dutt’s on-screen lover in films like ‘Kartoos’, ‘Sanam’, ‘Khauff’ and ‘Mehbooba’ and others.
The Sanjay Dutt biopic, which is still untitled, stars Paresh Rawal in the role of the ‘Khalnayak’ actor’s father Sunil Dutt. It also stars Sonam Kapoor, Dia Mirza and Vicky Kaushal in pivotal roles. The movie went on floors in January 14 and is scheduled to release during Christmas season this year.
