Mahira Khan’s role in SRK’s ‘Raees’ shortened

In the wake of the terrorist attacks in Jammu’s Uri army base in September, there was a protest to put a ban on casting Pakistani artistes in Indian films. There was speculation that Mahira Khan might be replaced in Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Raees’, but the makers later confirmed that she is very much in the movie and there will be no replacement.

‘Raees’ is the Pakistani actress’ debut flick in Bollywood. And now, a report in Mumbai Mirror has stated that Mahira’s role in the crime drama has been shortened. Mahira had shot her portions with Shah Rukh during the Bhuj and Ahmedabad scheduled in Gujarat, followed by another in Mumbai, earlier this year. Thereafter, she left the country.

It was reported that a romantic sequence between Mahira and Shah Rukh and a song feature her would be shot later. But Shah Rukh has already started shooting for the remaining portions of the film, and a source close to the development has revealed to the daily that Mahira won't be back in India for any further shoots, nor will the unit be going abroad to shoot with her.

The source added that since the film revolves around the conflict between Shah Rukh’s character Raees Alam, a bootlegger, and ACP Ghulam Patel, played by Nawazwddin Siddiqui, it was not difficult to trim her role, and it has been done with the intention of not hurting public sentiment.

So now, fans and audience will have to be content with only one song, and also sacrifice a romantic sequence between King Khan and the Pakistani beauty.

Directed by Rahul Dholakia, ‘Raees’ will hit screens on Republic Day, January 26.
