‘M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story’ becomes 2nd highest grosser of 2016

Sushant Singh Rajput starrer ‘M. S. Dhoni: The Untold Story’ has left behind Akshay Kumar’s ‘Rustom’ and ‘Airlift’ and has become the second highest grosser of 2016 with its collection so far touching Rs. 129.50 crores at the domestic box-office.

Worldwide, the biopic of cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni has done a business of over Rs. 215 crores.

The film released on September 30 to a huge response and by its first weekend, crossed the Rs. 50 crore mark in domestic collection. It has had a stupendous run in theatres in the first week and has been performing steadily, even in its third week.

The following week’s release ‘Mirzya’ was a much-anticipated film, but failed to perform. After that there was no big releases before the Diwali weekend. This has also greatly benefited the Neeraj Pandey directorial.

The film also features Anupam Kher as Dhoni’s father, Disha Patani as the cricketer’s first love, Kiara Advani as his wife, and Bhoomika Chawla as his sister.

The highest-grossing film of the year remains Salman Khan’s ‘Sultan’, with nett domestic collection of Rs. 300.45 crores. Akshay Kumar-starrer ‘Airlift’ with Rs. 129, ‘Rustom’ with Rs. 127.42 crores and ‘Housefull 3’ with Rs. 107.70, occupies the third, fourth and fifth place respectively.
