Legendary Bengali filmmaker Mrinal Sen passes away at 95

Iconic Bengali filmmaker Mrinal Sen passed away at the age of 95 on Sunday morning at 10:30am at his Bhowanipore residence in Kolkata. For quite sometime, he had been suffering from a heart ailment. His death left a big vacuum in the Bengali film industry.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her condolences and tweeted, “Saddened at the passing away of Mrinal Sen. A great loss to the film industry. My condolences to his family.”

In 1981, Mrinal Sen was awarded with the Padma Bhushan. He was also an honorary Member of the Indian Parliament from 1998 to 2003. The French government awarded him the Commandeur de l'ordre des Arts et letters (Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters), the highest honor conferred by the country, in 1985. 

In the year 2003, he was honoured withThe Dadasaheb Phalke Award. In 2017, Sen was inducted as a member of the Oscar Academy. He was awarded Padma Bhushan - India's third highest civilian award - in 1983.

President Ram Nath Kovind also expressed condolence at Mrinal Sen’s death.

Bengali star Prosenjit Chatterjee said, "At the end of the year receiving news like demise of the legend Mrinal Sen saddens and shocks us. Mrinal jethu gave a new perspective to Indian cinema. It's a huge loss for all of us. May his soul rest in peace."

Union Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore also expressed grief at his death.

His passing away is the end of an era, and an irreparable loss for the Indian film industry.

He is known for his highly acclaimed films including "Neel Akasher Neechey", "Baishey Sravan", "Bhuvan Shome" and "Akaler Sandhane".
