Kundan Shah’s ‘P Se PM Tak’ creates fresh trouble in Censor Board

Veteran filmmaker Kundan Shah’s new film ‘P Se PM Tak’ is ready to hit screens on Friday, May 29, after passing through the scissors of the censor board where some 40 audio clips were snipped that held references to popular public figures.

The edited out portions were, however, not expletives or profanities and neither were the references made in a derogatory manner. The director was ordered to delete all references to actor Salman Khan, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalitha, and Sahara Chairman Subrata Roy.

“I was asked to remove the names of all popular figures like Salman Khan, Jayalalitha and Subrata Roy even if they were not being used in a degrading context,” Shah told a national daily.

Meanwhile, Ashoke Pandit, member of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), expressed his displeasure over the matter on Twitter. “Feeling sad for one of the masters of Indian Cinema #KundanShah, who’s victimised like others by one man's arrogance,” he wrote.

The tweet was possibly directed at CBFC chief Pankaj Nihalani whom Pandit had publicly criticized for alleged high-handedness in the Board’s decision-making process.

Shah, who had introduced satire films to Indian cinema for the first time with his 1983 film ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’ has claimed friendships with both Pandit and Nihalani.

The Nihalani-led CBFC has been divided by an internal rift with members publicly disagreeing with changes ordered in films such as Anushka Sharma’s ‘NH10’ and Varun Dhawan’s ‘Badlapur’. Recently, another member Nandini Sardesai had filed a complaint against the “autocratic behaviour” of the chairperson with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, alleging violation of rules during the screening of Anurag Kashyap’s ‘Bombay Velvet’.

‘P Se PM Tak’ is a political satire that revolves around a prostitute who ends up being a chief minister and then prime minister in an interesting turn of events.

Southern siren Meenakshi Dixit, who plays the lead role, will make her Bollywood debut with this film. Actors Akhilendra Mishra and Upasana Singh also feature in the film.
