Vijay Mallya and his Bollywood connection

Once called the ‘King of Good Times’, flamboyant businessman Vijay Mallya is hogging the limelight for all the wrong reasons. With tags of ‘wilful-defaulter’ and ‘absconder’, the liquor baron’s fondness for ‘good times’ has brought bad times upon him. He is known for his extravagant lifestyle and hobbies like partying on his private Yachts with Bollywood beauties. In fact, the UB Group chairman whose company publishes the Kingfisher Calendar was the inspiration behind ‘realistic’ filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar’s 2015 film ‘Calendar Girls’. The Kingfisher Calendar is credited with advancing the careers of models and actresses who once featured in the calendar.

Let’s check out some Bollywood actresses who once graced the annual calendar in their hot bikini avatars.

Kyra Dutt appeared in the 2013 Kingfisher Calendar, which was shot in South Africa. She made her Bollywood debut with Madhur Bhandarkar’s ‘Calendar Girls’ in 2015, but unfortunately the film failed to work its magic at the box –office.

Lisa Haydon featured in the Kingfisher Calendar of 2011 edition which was shot in Mauritius. Lisa is best known for her work in 2014 film ‘Queen’ starring Kangana Ranaut. She will be next seen in comedy ‘Housefull 3’ which releases on June 3.

‘Jannat 2’ actress Esha Gupta won the title of Miss Photogenic in the Femina Miss India pageant in 2007, and came third in Miss India International. The 2010 Kingfisher Calendar, shot in Maldives, was one of her first major modelling assignments. She’ll be next seen in a negative role in Akshay Kumar starrer film ‘Rustom’ which releases on August 12.

Pakistani origin-American model-actress Nargis Fakhri was a part of the 2009 Kingfisher Calendar, which was shot on various locations in the Andaman and Nicobar islands. She will be next seen in biopic ‘Azhar’ based on the life of former Indian skipper Mohammed Azharuddin. She’ll play the role of his estranged second wife Sangeeta Bijlani.

Deepika Padukone is one of the top Bollywood actresses who is now set for her Hollywood debut with Vin Diesel starrer ‘XXX: The Return of Xander Cage’. The leggy actress won the Kingfisher Fashion Award for Model of the Year in 2006 and then appeared in the Kingfisher Calendar of that year. The shoot for the prestigious calendar took place in Australia.

Another top league actress Katrina Kaif landed a spot in the 2003 Kingfisher Calendar shot in Mauritius. In Bollywood, she had the backing of superstar Salman Khan with whom she had a long relationship till 2010. Kartina is currently shooting the last portions of Anurag Basu’s ‘Jagga Jasoos’ opposite her ex-boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor.

Brazilian model Nathalia Kaur came to India after receiving an offer. She won the Kingfisher Calendar Model Hunt in 2012 and featured in the calendar that year. Natalia who shot to fame with her item number in ‘Department’ will be next seen in John Abraham’s ‘Rocky Handsome’ releasing on March 25.

Brazilian actress Bruna Abdullah who works in Bollywood appeared in the 2007 edition of Kingfisher Calendar and was shot in French Riviera, France. Bruna was seen in films like ‘Grand Masti’, ‘I Hate Love Stories’ and ‘Jai Ho’.

Yana Gupta, whose claim to fame in Bollywood is the popular item song ‘Babuji Zara Dheere Chalo’ from film ‘Dum’ featured in the launch edition of the Kingfisher Calendar in 2003. It was shot in the island of Mauritius. She also appeared in the subsequent editions of 2004 and 2005 which were shot in Thailand and South Africa respectively.

Model-actress-dancer Monikangana Dutta from remote Indian state of Assam has walked the ramp in Paris Fashion Week, India Fashion Week, Milan Fashion Week and Australian Fashion Week. She featured in 2008 Kingfisher Calendar shot within the country in Goa, Andaman, Ladakh and Udaipur. Monikangana made her acting debut with a role in 2010 film ‘Guzaarish ’.
