Kerala court stays the release of ‘Rang Rasiya’

It looks like even after 6 years of delay, the Ketan Mehta directed period drama ‘Rang Rasiya’ cannot release smoothly. The film’s release that was scheduled on 7th November has been restrained for now by an interim injunction issued by Mavelikara munsiff court in Kerala. The injunction was issued after the granddaughter of Raja Ravi Varma, Indira Devi Kunjamma, filed a complaint against the makers of the film, over the depiction of the famous painter’s personal life in the film.

The film is based on the biographical novel ‘Raja Ravi Varma’ written by author Ranjit Desai. Judge Mohan Prasad who passed the order said that the makers should not release the film without a disclaimer that the film is not related with the personal life of the 19th century painter. The order read, “Considering the plaintiff’s argument that the exhibition of the movie with the original picture of Ravi Varma and without a declaimer will discredit the reputation, decency and morality of the family, the court has ordered anybody in connection with the movie from releasing or exhibiting the movie.”

However director Ketan Mehta denied the complaint and revealed that they have added a disclaimer that the film is not related with Raja Ravi Varma’s private life. He said, “The film was certified by the Central Board of Film Certification a year ago. I had received a legal notice on October 11 and we had replied accordingly. The film is slated to be released by November 7. We will fight it legally.” The director further told the media, "The film is not a true story, but is based on the novel written by Ranjit Desai, titled Raja Ravi Varma over 25 years ago…The promos and trailer have been available for over five years. Obviously, receiving a legal notice a week before the release of the film has mala fide intentions.”

On the other hand, Indira Devi Kunjamma said that she has not received any reply from the producer and director of the film and said, “The videos appeared on YouTube are absurd. The obscene part of the movie cannot be compared with the real life of our grandfather. He moved to Mumbai at the age of 46. So, would it be fair to say that he had an affair with a model in his old age?  He had no immoral affair with any woman. Our only demand is to include a disclaimer that the theme had no connection with the real life of Ravi Varma and no original picture should be used in the movie.” ‘Rang Rasiya’ stars Randeep Hooda and Nandana Sen in the lead roles.
