Saytamev Jayate: Aamir Khan the Social Crusader

Aamir Khan is not among the run of the mill stars of Indian film industry. The superb actor with his Mr. Perfectionist image has carved a niche for himself not only as Bollywood star but as also as a crusader against social atrocities.

His reality TV show ‘Satyamev Jayate’ on relevant social issues has become a movement. The show was first aired on 6th May, 2012 on Star Network along with Doordarshan, the national broadcaster. His first show dealt with female feticide. The practice is followed not only in rural areas but also among the urban elites. Though people were aware, it was neglected and ignored by the top officials and politicians. Aamir’s show aroused the masses and the Govt.’s. The state in which these happening were recorded was Rajasthan. The Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Mr. Ashok Gehlot met Mr. Kahn and assured him that proper action would be taken against the culprits.

Aamir’s show not only moved the public but also the sleeping bureaucrats and politicians. One lady after the episode said she had helped one of her relatives abort a female child, she felt guilty about it now and wants to have a daughter.

In one of his recent episodes Aamir had spoken against the plight of manual scavengers and the Govt. of India has announced that by 2016 manual scavenging will be removed from the country. Amir went to Prime Minister Manmohan Sigh to discuss the same on July 16th 2012.

His critics argue that the show is over rated. Aamir earns a hefty Rs. 3 crore per episode, and the critics accuse him of making money off the hardship and miseries of the society. The episodes are aired on Star Network, which is a commercial network which and  is interested only in increasing its TRP by any means. Similar social issues were already aired by its competitors, like Sony’s ‘Crime Patrol’, Channel V’s ‘Gumraah’ and IBN’s ‘Zindagi Live’, but they didn’t get highlighted as they weren’t hosted by any celebrity, like Aamir Khan.

On his part Aamir has rubbished these accusations as the show is aired not only on Star but Doordarshan and AIR, which are national broadcasters. Also he could have done a game or reality show to earn money. He already does earn enough through, films, ads and endorsements. For Aamir it’s more about giving back to the society, to see that citizens of this country live their life with dignity.
