Kajol. mom Tanuja and sister Tanisha visit Durga Puja pandal

Kajol was spotted with mother and veteran actor Tanuja paying a visit to different puja pandals in Mumbai. They were accompanied by Tanisha and Sharbani. The North Bombay Sarbojanin Durga Puja Samiti is presently in its 70th year. This Durga Puja is the special attraction because it was organised mainly by the Mukerji family.

The five days event kick-starts with a fashion show by Bappi Lahiri’s daughter, Rema, and Sharbani’s brother, Samrat Mukherji. There will also be performances by singers Shaan, Meet Bros and Sonu Nigam on Asthami and Navmi.

“The tradition has been passed on from several generations, making this a ‘gharoa puja’. First, we visit the pandal to see the murti and later, to seek blessings,” Tanuja said.

Tanuja added that the festival evolved over the years with disposable plates replacing banana leaves for the bhog. The pandal this year is fully air-conditioned with special seating arrangements for the senior citizens.

According to Sharbani, her uncle Debu, with set designer Kiran, has come up with an unusually set design. “It’s ruins of a temple in Cambodia and people are mesmerised by it. It’s as concept- driven as a film set,” she marvels, adding that designer Amit Pal worked on their murti for two months at Shivaji Park and met the deadline despite the deluge.

“Every morning, housewives come to the pandal to prepare Maa’s khichuri. The flavour at our pandal is different,” the actress says, adding that saree vendors from Kolkata visit the Mukherjis’ Mumbai residences and the women choose suitable saree.

“Pujo is a few days of celebration, bonding, and an opportunity to go completely traditional.” Said Lahiri’s son Bappa. “The pandals are marked with magnificent tableaus of Maa Durga, coming to our city with her children, Ganesh, Kartik, Lakshmi and Saraswati from Kailash to Dharti”, he added.
