‘Kabali’: Rajanikanth starrer to have over Rs 120 cr opening weekend

Rajinikanth starrer much hyped ‘Kabali’ is expected to do a business of over Rs 120 crore on its opening weekend. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, the gangster flick has been smashing records at box-office.

‘Kabali’ opened to huge fan frenzy of July 22 with some shows starting as early as 3 am. It raked in an amount of Rs 48.95 crore on the opening day and another Rs 46.89 crore on Saturday at the Indian box office. The Tamil version alone minted Rs 21.5 crore on day one making it the highest grossing Tamil movie of the year.

Not just in the South, ‘Kabali’ is performing well in North India as well. It has outdone Salman Khan’s ‘Sultan’ that got Rs 36.54 crore opening, but fell short of ‘Baahubali’ which made Rs 50 crore opening day profit.

As per trade analyst Taran Adarsh, the film has grossed about Rs 11.40 crore net, including Hindi, Tamil and Telugu versions, in two days. On Friday, it garnered Rs 5.20 cr., while on Saturday it showed a 19.23% growth with a collection of Rs 6.20 crore. These earnings account for 1000 screens in north India.

‘Kabali’ is going strong at box offices in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala and the collections on Sunday were expected to be Rs 50 crore approximately. The final figures are yet to come.

Directed by Pa Ranjit, ‘Kabali’ features Rajanikanth in the titular role of an ageing gangster. It also features Radhika Apte, Dhansika, Attakathi Dinesh, Kalaiarasan and Taiwanese actor Winston Chao.
