Kaabil vs Raees day 3: SRK leads the race with Rs 59.83 cr


Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Raees’ and Hrithik Roshan-starrer ‘Kaabil’ had a mid-week release on January, amidst much hype and drama due to the box-office clash. ‘Raees’ was in an advantageous position with a higher screen share, opening in 2700 screens, as against 2200 screens allocated to ‘Kaabil’.

Both the films were overall, well-received by critics and audience, and in three days, i.e. Friday, the total domestic collection of ‘Kaabil’ stood at Rs. 38.87 crores, while ‘Raees’ was ahead in the race with Rs. 59.83 crores in its kitty. Both the films witnessed a hike in collection on day two, Republic Day, followed by a dip on third day.

On opening day Wednesday, ‘Kaabil’ raked in Rs. 10.43 crore and collected another Rs. 18.67 crore on Thursday. The business saw a drop on Friday with a collection of Rs. 9.77 crore, taking the three-day total to 38.87 crore. With good reviews and word-of-mouth publicity, the film is expected to do better over the weekend.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh provided a day-wise break-up of Kaabil's box office figures tweeting, “#Kaabil Wed 10.43 cr, Thu 18.67 cr, Fri 9.77 cr. Total: ? 38.87 cr. India biz... Biz should witness growth on Sat and Sun.”

Directed by Sanjay Gupta, ‘Kaabil’ stars Yami Gautam opposite Hrithik, while actor brothers Rohit and Ronit Roy play the antagonist. It is a revenge drama wherein a blind man takes it upon himself to avenges the death of his blind wife, after the system fails to give justice. Hrithik’s portrayal of a visually impaired character has been much appreciated.

On the other hand, ‘Raees’ had a strong opening bringing in Rs 20. 42 crores on day one. Day two raked in a higher amount of Rs 26. 30 crore, while the third day saw a drop at Rs. 13.11 cr, totalling the film’s three-day income at Rs. 59.83 crore. Saturday and Sunday collections are expected to be higher. Taran Adarsh shared on Twitter, “#Raees Wed 20.42 cr, Thu 26.30 cr, Fri 13.11 cr. Total: ? 59.83 cr. India biz… All set for a big Sat and Sun.”

Set in Gujarat of 1990s, ‘Raees’ is based on the life of a bootlegger named Raees Alam, played by Shah Rukh, and a tough cop whose aim is thwart the illegal trade of Raees. Nawazuddin Siddiqui plays the cop, while Pakistani actress Mahira Khan plays Raees’ love interest.
