John Abraham to play the lead in Soojit Sircar’s biopic on football legend Bhaduri

Bollywood hunk John Abraham will play the role of Sibdas Bhaduri in Soojit Sircar’s upcoming biopic on the legendary footballer, titled ‘1911’. The pre-production process has already started on the project, which was reported to have been delayed earlier this year.

The ‘Desi Boyz’ star will portray footballer Sibdas Bhaduri, who successfully led bare-footed Indians against British footballers in 1911 in the period film.  Bhaduri was the captain of Mohun Bagan team which won the IFA Shield as the first Indian team that year.

The former model had also played the role of a footballer in the 2007 film ‘Dhan Dhana Dhan Goal’ that also starred Arshad Warsi, Boman Irani and his ex-girlfriend Bipasha Basu.

A sports fanatic, John is also the owner of Indian Super League franchise North-East United Football Club.

The film ‘1911’ will be entirely shot on Kolkata maidan area, said Soojit who had also directed ‘Vicky Donor’, the critically acclaimed and commercially successful film on sperm donation.

“John is preparing for the character by reading details on the pre-Independence era football legend. It will be a sports film with patriotic fervour like ‘Chak De India’,” the ‘Piku’ director said. “I will do everything to retain authenticity of the period,” he added.

John had earlier worked in Soojit’s film ‘Madras Cafe’, a political thriller based on the Sri Lankan civil war and assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. Both are also working together on another film ‘Agra Ka Daabra’, also starring Ayushmann Khurrana.

Meanwhile, Soojit has shelved his project on filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh due to his untimely demise last year.

“‘Red Carpet’ won’t happen without Ritu-da. The film was based on him and only he could have enacted the role. Now that he is no more, there is none who can match his persona and screen presence. So I have shelved the project,” a sad Soojit said.
