Jab Harry Met Sejal: CBFC puts forth a condition to pass the word ‘intercourse’

The censor board, which took an objection to the word ‘intercourse’ in the second mini trailer of Shah Rukh Khan and Anushka Sharma’s upcoming film ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’, has now put forth a condition to pass the promo as well as the film without deleting the word.

Pahlaj Nihalani, chairman of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Friday said he would clear the use of the word ‘intercourse’ in the promo and body of the Imtiaz Ali directorial, if he gets one lakh votes from the common people in its support.

In an interview to a TV channel, Nihalani said, “You take voting from the public and I will clear the word (intercourse) on the promo and the film also. I want 1 lakh votes and I want to see that India has changed and Indian families want their 12-year-old kids to understand the meaning of this word (intercourse).”

The second mini promo titled ‘Indemnity Bond’ which dropped on internet on June 19, has Anushka’s character utter the word ‘intercourse’ in her dialogue. The CBFC had asked the makers to delete the term in order to telecast it.

In this regard, Nihalani told an English daily, "We've granted a U/A certification to the trailer on condition of deletion of the intercourse dialogue. They're yet to come back to us on that. So in principle, the trailer has not been passed yet."

He added, “They've uploaded the uncut trailer on YouTube. The CBFC cannot stop content on the Internet. But we can and will stop the broadcast of the uncensored footage on television. The trailer has been picked up from the web and is being aired on various news channels. This is completely against the law, and we plan to take the strictest action against the channels which have aired the censored content from Imtiaz Ali's film.”

However, the film’s team has denied breaking any law saying that the entire matter was a non-issue. "We have not released the promo of the film where the word 'intercourse' has been used, either in theatres or for TV. The promo was released only on the internet, and there is no censorship there. We have not broken any law," a leading publication quoted the team.

‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ is set to release on August 4.
