“It's a compliment! You look so great, TOI tells Deepika

A day after Bollywood star Deepika Padukone publicly expressed her anger towards one of India’s leading newspapers for publishing a story on her cleavage; the leading daily has posted a defensive statement on Twitter.

However the original story was removed from the account. The new post read, “It's a compliment! You look so great that we want to make sure everyone knew! :)”   However, even the defensive post was met with criticism from some quarters. Actress Nimrat Kaur wrote on her Twitter account, “Dear @TOIEntertain...with this 'compliment' , I shudder to think who this 'everyone' is you're reaching out to ?” It will be interesting to see how the situation unfolds in the coming days.

Last Sunday, a video showing the cleavage of the actress was posted on the online portal of the leading newspaper. Deepika was upset after seeing the video and wrote on her Twitter account, "Supposedly India's 'LEADING' newspaper and this is 'NEWS'!!?? (sic)'’.  She later followed it up with a series of angry tweets. They were as follows- “YES!I am a Woman.I have breasts AND a cleavage! You got a problem!!??”… “Dont talk about Woman's Empowerment when YOU don't know how to RESPECT Women!”

Deepika’s online protest has found overwhelming support from the Bollywood fraternity. Many notable personalities posted on Twitter to support Deepika and slammed the insensitiveness of the media. Generally Bollywood stars try to stay on the good side of the media as they get huge coverage and publicity from newspaper and channels. But this time Deepika has set an almost new trend in raising her voice against the media.

Leading filmmaker Karan Johar posted- “Appalled....shocked and disgusted at the level of disrespect shown…Deepika or any women in the world cannot and should not stand for this!!” Deepika’s co-star from her latest release ‘Finding Fanny’ Arjun Kapoor wrote, “We have hit a new low today...forget complimenting a woman have the ability to respect a woman first...” Priyanka Chopra congratulated her for taking a stand for herself as well as others, as there were similar videos of other heroines as well. She posted, “Well done @deepikapadukone ! Taken a stand for all of us. Xoxo” The director of ‘Finding Fanny’ Homi Adjania posted, “we just slam ourselves back into the dark ages! Reputed channels inciting regressive shit. What are they thinking?! Sad!” Noted filmmaker Shoojit Sircar wrote, “That's eve teasing of different [email protected] that's the way women shd stand against & protest ...”
