Hrithik’s ‘Kaabil’ not to clash with ‘Raees’, to hit screens a day ahead

Hrithik Roshan’s upcoming film 'Kaabil', which was earlier supposed to lock horns with Shah Rukh Khan's 'Raees' on Republic Day, will now release a day prior on January 25, thus averting the big clash.

"Rakesh Roshan's 'Kaabil' will be releasing in theatres across India on 25th January 2017 (evening) and will be in theatre from the 6pm show onwards," a statement from the makers announced.

‘Kaabil’ will also release in Telugu, and producer Rakesh Roshan shared the Telugu poster of the movie featuring Hrithik and the leading lady Yami Gautam on Twitter yesterday (December 2). The poster has Jan.25 written on it as the release date.

"Experience the warmth of a beautiful love story called #Kaabil on 25th Jan. #[email protected]," Rakesh Roshan tweeted.

It is a normal trade practice to release films on Fridays, but ‘Kaabil’ makers have decided go in for a Wednesday 6 pm release because this way they can encash on the Republic Day (January 26) holiday.

Rakesh Roshan was quoted as saying, “There have been instances in the past of movies being released mid-week especially if there is a big National holiday following it.  My director Sanjay Gupta and I are in agreement on this.  After hearing what our distributors have to say, we thought it makes perfect sense go with a January 25 release.''

He added that it was a planned strategy from the beginning itself and said that the decision wasn’t about getting an upper hand over ‘Raees’.

The success of ‘Kaabil’ is important for Hrithik as his previous films – ‘Mohenjo Daro’ and ‘Bang Bang’ didn’t do good business at the box-office. Meanwhile, Shah Rukh’s ‘Raees’ which is already getting a delayed release, is a much-awaited film of 2017. So the box-office tussle is going to be critical. However, ‘Kaabil’ will not get much advantage of releasing a day ahead of ‘Raees’, as the difference is only in few hours. ‘Kaabil’ will hit screens at 6 pm, while ‘Raees’ will open at 9 am next day.
