Hindi Medium trailer: Irrfan Khan’s film is a battle of Hindi vs English

Acclaimed actor Irrfan Khan’s upcoming movie ‘Hindi Medium’ is out with its trailer. Pakistani actress Saba Qamar is making her foray into Bollywood with the film. She plays the role of his Irrfan’s wife in the movie, which is a satirical take on the Indian educational system.

The ‘Madaari’ actor on Thursday evening took to Twitter to share the trailer by writing that it is a fight between Hindi and English. “????? ??????? ?? ?????? ???? ! Here's the trailer of #HindiMedium @tseries @MaddockFilms @HindiMediumfilm,” Irrfan tweeted.

The movie depicts the struggle of parents to get their child admitted into an English medium school. The two-and-a-half-minute trailer begins with Irrfan and Saba being taught by a foreigner on how to describe the qualities of their daughter in English during her admission interviews. Irrfan describes his life as Hindi, but his wife to be English as she is adamant to get her daughter educated in English to fit in society. The couple changes their lifestyle and mannerisms to project themselves as ‘hi-fi’ people, but still their daughter doesn’t get admission. When someone suggests to apply through ‘gareeb quota’, they again transform themselves to appear ‘gareeb’ (poor people).

There is a hard-hitting dialogue by Saba as she says, “In this country English is not a language it is a class. And the only way to get into this class is seeking education from a good school." Irrfan also gets to showcase his great comic skills and timing with his dialogues. It also features popular Punjabi singer Sukhbir's famous song ‘Tare gin gin yaad vich teri’, which plays in the background. The film also stars Deepak Dobrial and Amrita Singh, who also get screen time in the trailer. It also carries the slogan of P&G’s Shiksha initiative with a twist that reads, ‘Hi-fi school mein padega India, tabhi toh aage badega India’.

Directed by Saket Chaudhary, ‘Hindi Medium’ is set to hit theatres on May 12.
