Hema Malini’s driver arrested after car accident kills a child


Actor-politician Hema Malini’s driver has been arrested after the accident in Rajasthan’s Dausa district on the night of July 3 which killed a five-year-old girl and injured others including Hema.

The accident occurred at around 9 PM when the BJP MP’s Mercedes collided with an Alto carrying five passengers, including two children on National Highway 11 at the Lalsot bypass. Hema was returning to Jaipur after visiting the Mehendipur Balaji temple.

An FIR has been filed against Mahesh Thakur, the driver of the Hema’s Mercedes. "I am being told the Mercedes was speeding. It drove over the divider," said senior police officer Rajinder Tyagi to NDTV.

Hema, a BJP MP from Mathura was sitting in the front passenger seat and sustained injuries to her forehead. She was rushed to the Fortis Hospital in Jaipur where doctors conducted CT scan and other tests to check for any internal injuries. She received a few stitches on her forehead and was said to be fine.

The hospital will hold a press conference on her condition at 11:45 am on July 3, Friday.

The girl who died has been identified as Sonam. The other injured were taken to a hospital in Dausa from where two of them, including a two-year-old child were referred to Sawai Man Singh hospital in Jaipur. 

The vehicles involved in the accident have been seized.
