Hema Malini accident: Arrested driver released on bail

The driver of Actress-politician Hema Malini’s Mercedes, who was arrested on Friday after a car crash that killed a 5-year-old girl and injured others, has been released on bail.

Rajasthan police arrested driver Mahesh Thakur, a resident of Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh under sections 304-A (Causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code(IPC) which is a bailable offence, officials said. He was later produced in court and granted bail.

According to police, the Mercedes was speeding and it drove over the divider.

The accident occurred on Thursday night when Hema’s Mercedes collided with an Alto on National Highway 11 at the Lalsot bypass in Dausa district. Five persons were travelling in the Alto, including two women and two children.

The BJP MP from Mathura received injuries to her forehead cheeks and legs and fractured her nose. She was rushed to the Fortis Hospital, Jaipur, where she received treatment.

The girl who died has been identified as Sonam. Her parents, younger brother and an aunt were taken to a hospital from where Sonam’s aunt and her toddler brother, said to be seriously injured were referred to SMS hospital in Jaipur.
