Singer Sapna Chaudhary attempts suicide over online harrasment
Popular Haryana folk singer Sapna Chaudhary allegedly attempted suicide by consuming rat poison at her residence in southwest Delhi on Sunday, September 4. She was admitted in a private hospital in Nazafgarh in a critical condition.
Police have recovered a suicide note in which the 21-year-old singer alleged that she was being defamed on the social media by running an online campaign against her and even casting aspersions on her character by a Gurgaon resident.
“I am in this profession to earn a livelihood...The reason for my step is only and only Satpal Tanwar. With folded hands I appeal to those in the Haryana Cabinet to not trouble my mother after this and ensure the strictest possible punishment for Tanwar,” the note read.
Police said that they will verify the claims in her suicide note. "A case of abetment of suicide can be registered in this regard if found true," a leading daily quoted a police officer as saying.
According to reports, in July this year, the Gurgaon Plice booked the singer for hurting a particular community by using derogatory language in her songs, during a stage performance in February. The FIR was lodged after Dalit organisations threatened to launch protests if action was not taken. A similar complaint was also registered against her in Dogran Mohalla of Hisar.
A case has been registered by the police, and doctors reveased that her condition is stable now. A copy of the six-page suicide note in Hindi has also been sent to Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, the police informed.
