Freida Pinto to receive International Icon Award at her IIFA debut

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ actress Freida Pinto will be making her debut at the 17th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) beginning on Thrusday, June 23 in Spanish capital Madrid. The Indian-origin actress who has carved out a niche for herself in the West, will be presented with the International Icon Award at the event.

Freida has been credited with breaking the stereotypical image of an Indian woman in foreign films. A leading publication quoted a source as saying, “‘Slumdog Millionaire’ was that massive breakthrough point for India in the international film market. While we did see Indian actors being a part of Hollywood films, the Danny Boyle film ensured that Indian talent was looked at far more seriously.”

The actress has worked with some coveted filmmakers like Woody Allen, Rupert Wyatt, Tarsem Singh, Terrence Mallik etc. She also emerged as one of the youngest, most loved fashionistas.

Besides, Frieda also promotes humanitarian causes and is vocal about women's education and empowerment.

After attending IIFA, the actress will fly straight to Monrovia to join US First Lady Michelle Obama and her daughters Sasha and Malia, and their grandmother Marian Robinson for Let Girls Learn - a government initiative aimed at helping girls obtain quality education.

They will be travelling to Liberia, Morocco and Spain at the end of June and early July and visit young girls and help them receive quality education as part of the Let Girls Learn campaign.
