First weekend box office report of 'Mary Kom'

Pee Cee’s ‘Mary Kom’, finally released this Friday, 5th September 2014, in 3000 screens across India, is a sports biopic on MC Mary Kom. It depicts the life history and struggle of the boxing champion and is directed by Omung Kumar. Co-produced by Viacom 18 Motions Pictures and Sanjay Leela Bhansali, under the banner of Eros International, the film is all set to break records in the first weekend of its release.

The film-makers celebrate as the film has made a record collection of 17.25 crore over the first weekend. It minted 8.05 crore on the opening day and 9.2 crore on the second day. From Omung’s deft direction to Priyanka’s unmatchable performance to a convincing real life story, the movie has it all.

The film release was preceded by a world premiere at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival, where the movie was applauded and loved by everyone. Priyanka is on the ninth cloud, owing to the success of her film and has tweeted on Saturday, “Thank you for the incredible response to #MaryKom. I guess this film was such a heart wrenching experience that the love is just overwhelming (sic)."

‘Mary Kom’ has a benefit of being a solo release this week. Also, the tax exemption in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and the North-east has been a huge advantage for the film. Compared to other films with female leads, the collections of ‘Mary Kom’ is better than Kareena Kapoor Khan’s ‘Heroine’ and Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Queen’, although lesser than Vidya Balan starrer ‘Dirty Picture’.

The flick, ‘Mary Kom’ which is made on a mere fund of fifteen to eighteen crore rupees, inclusive of the  advertising, prints and production costs is steadily moving towards earning profits. The movie is all set to break even in a record time, although it has heavy weight actor, such as Priyanka Chopra on board.

Movie analysts believe that by Monday, the film will cross 24-28 crore.

Sources claim that the movie has earned another INR 3 - 4 crore from music rights it has with Zee Music Company and Vicom18. This will raise the producers’ return on investment by 16 to 20 crore and will put them in position of breaking even.

The COO of Viacom18 Motion Pictures, Ajit Andhare said, “Mary Kom has delivered a strong opening day and has set a new first-day benchmark for heroine-centric films. The word of mouth is positive and Priyanka’s standout performance has touched a chord with the audience across sections. The film is further set for a strong weekend.”

All the Best ‘Mary Kom’!
