First look: Karanvir Bohra’s ‘Ijazat’ tells the love story of Rajiv Gandhi & Sonia

Television actor Karanvir Bohra is all set to produce and star in a short film based on the love story of late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. Titled ‘Ijazat’, the short film also stars Priya Banerjee, last seen in ‘Jazbaa’, in the role of Sonia.

The first look of the film is out. The lead pair – Karanvir and Priya, have recreated and an old picture of Rajiv and Sonia enjoying ice-cream near India Gate. The two actors have aced the look in the photograph.

“This is a tribute to them. We have fictionalised a few things, though. There is no political agenda to grab eyeballs. It is a simple film, made to create a different content for audiences. I’m an actor, but sometimes, you come across an idea that you don’t wish to wait for someone to back,” Karanvir said in a statement.

The ‘Naagin 2’ actor was inspired to make the film after watching an old interview of the Rajiv Gandhi with Simi Grewal. The manner in which he spoke about Sonia stayed with the actor, who then decided to make this project.

“I admired the way he (Rajiv) spoke about mustering the courage to ask his mother Indira Gandhi ji, for permission (to marry Sonia),” the actor told Mid-day, adding that he is fascinated by love stories from the fifties and sixties due to their timeless flavour. He feels the youth will get curious about the retro vibe of this romantic love story.

The love story of Rajiv and Sonia, who is of Italian origin, was not a bed of roses and the couple had to fight class and cultural differences to get married and be together. The film will chronicle their journey from the time the two meet during their studies at the famous Trinity College of Cambridge.

The film will be shot in English and Italian, which will begin later this month. The release date of the film is yet to be announced.
