First look: Anupam Kher in and as ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’

Veteran actor Anupam Kher is set to portray ex-prime minister Manmohan Singh in upcoming film ‘The Accidental Prime Minister’, and its first look was unveiled today. The 62-year-old actor himself shared the image on his official Twitter handle.

The black-and-white image has Anupam Kher sporting a turban, specs and beard, just like Dr Manmohan Singh. The image shows the left profile of the face and beside it is a long corridor with the silhouette of a lady, whose features resemble Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi. The foreground of the poster has an image of the Rashtrapati Bhawan, besides other details like the title and expected time of release.

“To reinvent yourself as an actor is to challenge yourself. Looking forward to portraying #DrManmohanSingh in #TheAccidentalPrimeMinister.:)” the ‘Saaransh’ actor tweeted as he shared the first look poster.

‘The Accidental Prime Minister’ is a cinematic adaptation of Sanjoy Baru's book titled ‘The Accidental Prime Minister: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh’. The book, which released ahead of the 2014 Parliamentary Elections, was critical of Manmohan Singh’s first tenure as the United Progressive Alliance PM in the 14th Lok Sabha between May 2004 –May 2009.

National Award-winning filmmaker Hansal Mehta will write the screenplay for the movie, while it will be directed by debutant Vijay Ratnakar Gutte. The movie is expected to hit the screens in December 2018, just ahead of the next general election in 2019.

Other than Anupam Kher, the other cast for the film is yet to be finalised. "The research on the movie is already over. Auditioning for the remaining cast is in its final lap. The movie will hit the screens next year," producer Sunil Bohra earlier told a leading daily.
