‘English Vinglish’ earns $1 Million in Japan

In 2012, Bollywood diva Sridevi made a successful comeback to films after a 15 year hiatus with ‘English Vinglish’. The film and Sridevi’s performance both received praise all around the world from critics and audiences alike. International media termed Sridevi as the ‘Meryl Streep of India’. It was also very successful at the box office. Now even two years after its initial release, the film is still bringing in good news for the makers and actors. ‘English Vinglish’ has registered a box office collection of $1 million in Japan. 

The film released in Japan this year in June. At first it was released in 33 screens and later another 17 screens were added making it 50 screens across 20 cities in Japan. Aamir Khan starrer ‘3 Idiots’ is the highest grossing Bollywood film in Japan with a collection of $ 1.6 million. ‘English Vinglish’ is very close to the highest figure and if the good run continues it can go past ‘3 Idiots’. Sridevi was very happy to hear the news and said, “I am flattered with all the love and affection the film continues to receive and once again thank the director Gauri Shinde for making such a wonderful film”. The film has also done good business in Hong Kong, Germany and Taiwan.   

The film revolves around the story of a middle class housewife who is often mocked by her husband and daughter for her lack of English language skills. When she lands in America for her niece’s wedding she gets the opportunity to learn English. She enrolls in a course and learns not just English but also gains confidence and self-respect.

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan who has a cameo in the film wrote in his personal blog that he was in tears after watching the film. Sridevi said about her character, "All the characters, script of the film was so good that I never thought about my look. It is just a character that I am playing. It really touched my heart. As a mother and a woman, I could relate to the character. The day I read the script, I felt I have to do this."

Critics showered her with unanimous praise. Noted critic Taran Adarsh wrote in his review, "On the whole, ENGLISH VINGLISH is a remarkable motion picture. It's amusing, emotional, heartrending and also insightful. An inspiring film with an overwhelming message. A must-watch for every parent, every child. Strongly recommended!"
