Disco dancer Mithun Chakraborty turns 65!

The disco dancer of Bollywood Mithun Chakraborty who bagged the National Award for Best Actor for his very first movie, turns 65 today. The actor made his acting debut with the 1976 Hindi period drama film ‘Mrigayaa’ directed by Mrinal Sen.

The actor who is the Grand Master of ‘Dance India Dance’ on Zee TV will once again don the hat for the season 5 of the popular dance show that will start airing from June 27 every Saturday and Sunday. The show has found places in the Limca Book of Records and the Guinness World Records.

Informally called Mithun Da or Dada, he acted in films like ‘Mera Rakshak’, ‘Surakshaa’, ‘Tarana’ which were successful, but his 1982 film ‘Disco Dancer’ became a blockbuster and made him a star. The Babbar Subhash directorial saw him play the breathtaking role of dancer Jimmy. The songs of the film are even popular today. The film and others like ‘Dance Dance’ and ‘Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki’ brought out the dancer in him.

A comic book titled ‘Jimmy Zhingchak’ also has been made based on Mithun.

He appeared in a number of romantic and family dramas such as ‘Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye’, ‘Ghar Ek Mandir’, ‘Pyaar Jhukta Nahin’, ‘Swarag Se Sunder’ and ‘Pyaar Ka Mandir’. He was also widely recognized as an action hero in films like ‘Jagir’, ‘Jaal’, ‘Dilwaala’, ‘Watan Ke Rakhwale’ and ‘Waqt Ki Awaz’.

The actor who also worked in regional films like Bengali, Oriya, Punjabi, Telugu and Bhojpuri virtually ruled the film industry during the 1980s. He has immensely contributed to the industry and even today he continues the work which he had started a long time back.

He always had a higher number of releases during the 80s and became the highest paid star after Amitabh Bachchan.

In his career spanning over three decades, Mithun has won several awards. In 2007, he won the Lifetime Achievement Award and Role Model of the Year award from Stardust. At least five books in Bengali language have also been written upon him.

The actor-turned-politician was born as Gouranga Chakraborty on June 16, 1950. He is married to former actress Yogeeta Bali and have three sons – Mahakshay aka Mimoh, who is an actor, Rimoh and Namashi and a daughter Dishani.
