Deepika, Ranveer, Shahid begin shooting for Bansali’s ‘Padmavati’

Sanjay Leela Bhansali's magnum opus 'Padmavati' starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor has finally gone on floors on Tuesday, November 1, at Film City in Mumbai.

Shobha Sant, CEO of Bhansali Producdtions officially announced it on Twitter by posting a picture of the clapper board. According to the picture, the team began the shoot with scene no. 63. “#bigmoment #SanjayLeelaBhansali #Padmavati #ShootCommences at #FilmCity with @RanveerOfficial. ThankU every1 for the #GoodWishes,” the tweet read.

‘Padmavati’ is a historical drama based on the Rani Padmavati of Chittor, who was known for her beauty and intellect, and how she saves her honour from Sultan Alauddin Khilji, who was obsessed with her and attacked her kingdom to claim her.

Deepika plays the titular role of Rani Padmavati, Shahid plays her on-screen husband Rawal Ratan Singh, while Ranveer essays the grey-shaded role of Delhi Sultan, Alauddin Khilji. The movie also stars Aditi Rao Hydari in the role of Alauddin Khilji’s chief begum (wife) Kamla Devi.

The film had been through several hiccups before the team finally commenced the shooting. First, Deepika allegedly refused to work with any small time or television actor in the role of her on-screen husband; then there were cold vibes between Ranveer and Shahid, as the former felt that his character might be overshadowed. Then Eros backed out from the project citing budget issues, after which Viacom 18 Motion Pictures stepped in its place.

‘Padmavati’ is reportedly being made on an enormous budget of Rs. 170 crores. The movie is scheduled for a release towards the end of next year.
