Deepika Padukone reacts on ‘Pinga’ controversy

The song ‘Pinga’ featuring actresses Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra from ‘Bajirao Mastani’ had kicked up a storm when it released on Sunday (November 15). It received mixed reactions from people.

Some people appreciated Priyanka and Deepika’s look and performance in the song, but it failed to ring in the ears of several others, including historians and artistes who lashed out at the makers for ignoring historical facts and focusing more on glamour quotient.

A descendent of the Peshwas, Mohini Karkarey had in an open letter slammed the director for his ill-research and not knowing about the life and times of the Peshwa era. She also noted some facts about the historical characters. She claimed that Kashibai could not have danced as she was suffering from arthritis. Moreover, it was not in the culture. She also cleared that Kashibai and Mastani had met only once during their lifetime, that too formally.

As the debate over how much liberty filmmakers can take while making historical or biographical films continues, Deepika has reacted over the whole issue.

At a recently held press conference when Deepika, who portrays the role of warrior princess Mastani in the movie, was asked about the controversy, she played it safe saying she was not the right person to answer this.

She said, “Yes, I read some stories about it, but I have no idea what it’s all about.” When probed about her opinion, the ‘Piku’ actress turned defensive and said, “I think the best person to talk about this would be Sanjay Leela Bhansali and I guess, I would rather let him clear it.”

‘Bajirao Mastani’ is set to release on December. The official trailer of the film will be launched today in presence of director Sanjay Leela Bhansali lead actors Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. Priyanka Chopra will join via live video conference from the US where she is shooting for her American series ‘Quantico’.
