Deepika Padukone was spotted on the set of ‘Chhapaak’ and she perfectly stepped into the role of acid attack survivor Lakshmi. Her character is named Malti and she looks exactly like Lakshmi. The 33-year-old actress, is currently shooting for the film in Delhi.

Fans and Bollywood celebrities heaved praise on the ‘Padmaavat’ actress for her acid attack survivor avatar.

Rajkummar Rao called it "pathbreaking" while Parineeti Chopra said "now that's an important film."

On March 25th, Deepika Padukone shared the first look of her upcoming film ‘Chhapaak’ in which she is playing the role of acid survivor Laxmi Agarwal The first look is quite appealing.

Sharing the first look with her fans, Deepika announced the release of the film as well. Unveiling the look she wrote, "A character that will stay with me forever... #Malti. Shoot begins today #Chhapaak. Releasing 10th January, 2020."

Earlier, talking about choosing Deepika to play the acid attack survivor, Meghna had told Bombay Times, “I was instinctively convinced that Deepika would do justice to the character and the story. Also, her physicality matched with what I’d imagined for Laxmi’s character. I’m grateful and encouraged that she was so spontaneous in her decision to do the film. When you take a face as beautiful as hers and portray her as an acid attack survivor, the magnitude of the violence and damage is that much more resounding.”

Vikrant Massey has also been roped in to play Deepika’s partner Alok Dixit.

"The cast is slowly coming together. Vikrant is somebody I’ve wanted to work with since Raazi, after seeing him in A Death in the Gunj. In the film, he plays a North Indian boy who used to be a professional before he decided to become an activist, then, started a campaign against acid violence which is how he came to meet Laxmi in real life. I speak for both Deepika and myself when I say that we are both really excited to have Vikrant play this part.” Meghna had told Mumbai Mirror.

Laxmi is happy that Deepika is playing her role. She said, “I am so happy that Deepika is playing the role. I have no right to judge her. How can I judge someone for something which I can’t do. She has played wonderful characters on screen and I believe she will give her best.”

"I was happy to see Deepika's first look from the film. I was feeling good that a celebrity has come in that look. A lot of make-up artistes changed a natural face to an acid-distorted face. And I felt, 'see, they are finding beauty in an acid-burnt face'," added Laxmi.

The film is set to hit the screens on January 10, 2020.
