Deepika invited to grace Champions League final in Lisbon

Deepika Padukone is in peak form right now. Her films are having a great run at the box office and her popularity is at an all time high. Recently she has added another feather to her cap. UEFA has invited her as a guest to watch this year’s (2014) UEFA Champions League final in Lisbon, Portugal. The final will take place on Saturday, 24th May.  Deepika is very happy with this honor and expressed her excitement in a statement, "(I am) Honored to be UEFA's guest for the Champions League final in Lisbon. Looking forward to a competitive game of football with two of Europe's best teams".

The football fans in India who will be watching the game on TEN ACTION channel can expect to catch a glimpse of Bollywood’s current reigning queen.  The UEFA Champions League is the top club football tournament in the world. It is telecasted in more than 223 countries and has a global audience of more than four billion. This year’s final will be played between two Spanish teams, the hugely popular Real Madrid and their fierce rivals, the dark horse Atletico Madrid. While there will be plenty of fireworks on the field, personalities like Deepika will ensure that there is a dash of glamour in the galleries.

Indian celebs are slowly becoming regular guests at the UEFA Champions League final. Last year (2013) for the final match in London between Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, actor Abhishek Bachchan and legendary cricketer Kapil Dev were invited. They were accompanied by Bollywood producer Bunty Walia. One of the main reasons for having Indian icons on board is that the European football is very popular in India and because of India’s 1 billion plus population, is considered a huge potential market for football. In Bollywood too there are several football fans including Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham and Ranbir Kapoor.

There can be little doubt over why Deepika was chosen as this year’s guest. In 2013 two of her films (‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’ and ‘Chennai Express’) became mega hits, grossing over a billion rupees. Her last release was ‘Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela’ a film inspired by Shakespeare’s tragedy ‘Romeo and Juliet’. The film was commercially very successful and critics showered praise on her for her performance in the film. Her fans are now eagerly anticipating another big release, ‘Kochadaiiyaan’ opposite superstar Rajnikanth that was shot with the help of advanced motion capture technology.
