‘Dangal’ actress Zaira Wasim rescued from drowning in Dal Lake

Teenage actress Zaira Wasim, who played the role of a young Geeta Phogat in Aamir Khan’s blockbuster ‘Dangal’ was saved from drowning, after her car fell into the Dal Lake in Srinagar, J&K, on Thursday night.

Zaira, along with a male friend, was travelling in a car on Boulevard road when the driver lost control and the vehicle skidded off the road and fell into the lake. Locals rushed to the spot and rescued the occupants of the vehicle. While Zaira escaped unhurt, her friend sustained injuries in the accident, an agency report stated quoting locals.

Zaira’s excellent performance in ‘Dangal’ fetched her the Best Supporting Actress at the 64th National Awards. However, post the release of ‘Dangal’, the actress was brutally trolled and threatened apparently for meeting Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. She was forced to apologise in a Facebook post which she later deleted. Several celebrities, including Aamir Khan, politicians Omar Abdullah, Venkaiah Naidu and even Commonwealth gold medallist wrestler Geeta Phogat came out in her support.

Zaira will be next seen in musical drama ‘Secret Superstar’, in which her screen-father Aamir Khan also has an extended cameo. The film traces the journey of a teenaged girl who aspires to be a singer, but her father doesn’t support her dreams. So, she hides her identity beneath a burqa (veil) and records videos of her singing and uploads them on internet.

‘Secret Superstar’ is the directorial debut of Aamir Khan’s former manager Advait Chandan and is scheduled to release on August 4.
