Congress urges Amitabh Bachchan to stop endorsing GST

Mega star Amitabh Bachchan endorsing the ruling government’s Goods and Services Tax, has irked the opposition Congress. Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam as asked the legendary actor to refrain from acting as the brand ambassador of the tax reform scheduled to be implemented from July 1.

In a statement, Nirupam said that he had utmost respect for Amitabh Bachchan and hence "wanted to caution him" against being used by government on the issue of GST.

"Both Prime Minister (Narendra Modi) and Finance Minister (Arun Jaitley) know that the government is not ready nor does it have the infrastructure to roll out GST. That's why it is using a legend like Amitabh Bachchan so that he becomes the fall guy and has to face the brickbats," the Congress leader said in the statement.

He also warned the actor of protests by trader groups, saying, “He (Bachchan) should not promote GST in its current form. There is already anger among traders against it. There will be protests against it and also against Big B as he is the brand ambassador. So he so should not promote GST."

Nirupam added, “...I am suggesting Amitabh Bachchan should not be a party to every foolishness of the BJP. You (Amitabh Bachchan) are a known person and have a wonderful reputation which may get maligned if there is a backlash from traders."

A 40-second video has also been released in which Amitabh Bachchan explains GST as an unifying force, just like the three colours in the national flag.
