Confirmed! Priyanka Chopra to star in Kalpana Chawla’s biopic

Priyanka Chopra, who has been missing from the Bollywood scene for quite some time, has finally signed her next project which is a biopic on late astronaut Kalpana Chawla. It will be her second biopic after Omung Kumar’s ‘Mary Kom’ based on the Olympic medallist boxer from Manipur.

The 34-year-old actress recently returned to India on a short break after wrapping up the shoot of her American drama series ‘Quantico 2’. The last time Priyanka was in Mumbai during the Christmas and New Year holidays, she had announced about signing two Bollywood projects. She was last seen in Prakash Jha’s ‘Jai Gangaajal’.

A film based on Kalpana Chawla was announced last year itself, and reportedly, Priyanka’s team has been involved in the project for over a year now and the script has finally been locked. The biopic will be directed by debutante Priya Mishra.

Priya confirmed the news to a leading tabloid saying, “I have been working on it for the past seven years. A new production banner will back the project. I was last heading a TV channel creatively and post 2011, quit to pursue filmmaking. This is one of the two scripts that I have written.”

Priya has also met Kalpana’s parents several times as part of her research for the film.

"The film will be mounted on an international scale. A new production company, Getway, is likely to produce the biopic," the tabloid quoted a source as saying.

Kalpana Chawla, who hailed from Karnal, Haryana, was the first Indian woman astronaut in space. She died during her second expedition, along with six other crew members in February 2003 when the space shuttle Columbia exploded. She spent 31 days, 14 hours and 54 minutes in space.

Meanwhile, Priyanka will be returning to the US for the promotion of her Hollywood debut ‘Baywatch’ starring Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron among others. The movie is slated to release on May 26
