Choreographer Geeta Kapoor arrested, later released on bail

‘Dance India Dance’ fame Geeta Kapoor was arrested for rash driving. The Versova police arrested the choreographer last Thursday for hitting a pedestrian. It has been reported that she was released on bail later.

Geeta was driving a white Honda Accord on JP Road in the early hours of Thursday. It was at 5 am in the morning that the incident occurred in Versova. She ran into a pedestrian at Vateshwar Naka near a medical store. The injured pedestrian has been identified as Nisar Noormohammed and he was exiting the medical store. He had bought medicines at the shop and was returning home thereafter. The man was trying to cross the road and got hit by Geeta’s car.

Some on lookers were present at the site. They reported that the car was running at a high speed and the road was empty. A police officer told the media, “The victim fractured his right knee. The choreographer has tried to settle the matter out of the police station level and even assured giving medical assistance and tried to avoid filing FIR against her. However, the case has been registered and she is being arrested.” The victim Nisar Noormohammed has given his statement to the police. The 37 year old man is a repairman and driver by profession. He said in his complaint, “The car knocked me seconds after I stepped out of the medical store situated on the roadside and came on the road. Before I could realize the car knocked me down. I just remembered I was taken to the hospital.”

Geeta did not run away from the spot after she hit the man. Instead, she stopped and provided help to the injured. She called the ambulance and the man was then taken to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital that is located in Andheri. Vinayak Deshmukh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IX), reported that Geeta wasn’t drunk at the time of accident. She was summoned to the police station and arrested. She was arrested under sections 279 – ‘rash driving’ and 338- ‘using grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others’ of Indian Penal Code. But later, the choreographer was released on bail.

The police officer reported “Choreographer Geeta Kapur was driving back to her home in Lokhandwala after dropping off her friend in Yari Road. She told us that she was trying to avoid hitting a rash biker when she lost control of the vehicle and hit Nisar.”
