'Chennai Express' earns 39 crore in just two days


‘Chennai Express’ is Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padkone starrer masala movie which was released on Thursday (8th August). The movie is directed by Rohit Shetty. The movie is co produced by The Disney UTV and Red Chillies Entertainment.  The movie was released on Eid weekend. It is just two days the film hit the theatres and it already collected 39 crore at the box-office.

The film's overseas report card is also impressive. 'Chennai Express' witnessed the highest opening day for a Hindi movie in UK. "#ChennaiExpress is on a record-smashing spree in UK as well. Collects £ 258,598 on Friday. HIGHEST opening day for a Hindi movie!"

Taran Adarsh gives the figures: "#ChennaiExpress takes a huge start in USA-Canada. Thursday night preview shows: $ 260,000. Final numbers yet to come in. Awesome!"

Thursday saw paid preview shows of this movie. Paid previews are limited screenings of big ticket movies. They are usually carried a day before the official release of the movie. At the end of the paid previews, the movie collected Rs. 6.7 crores in the domestic market, which is a very good sum. ‘3 Idiots’ went for paid preview shows and had collected 2.75 crores.

The film is released in 3700 screens in India and about 750 screens abroad. Outside India, the movie is released mainly in UK (175 screens), North America (195 screens), West Asia/North Africa (55 screens), Australia (30 screens), Germany, Switzerland, Morocco, Austria, Peru, Israel and France. In international markets, the movie is available in different languages subtitles.

‘Chennai Express’ is expected to have earned close to 35-40 crores on day one after the paid previews. Last year, Salman’s ‘Ek Tha Tiger’ was released on Eid and it gained Rs. 33 crores on first day of its business. The morning shows saw 70 percent occupancy which rose up to 90 percent occupancy at noon shows. Many multiplexes even had back to back house full shows.

The movie is surely going to benefit from long holiday weekend. The predictions by trade Analysts about the business of this movie have come true.

“The box office journey started with the highest-ever collections on paid previews and we are confident that ‘Chennai Express’ will continue to create a new benchmark at the box office each passing day,” said Gaurav Verma who is the Director of India Theatrical Distribution, Disney UTV.

Gautam Dutta, COO, PVR Cinemas said, “The movie has seen 93-95 per cent occupancy on Day 1 at PVR Cinemas alone. Combining Cinemax and PVR screens we believe we have garnered nearly four lakh admits on Friday.”

Abhishek Rai, Fame Cinemas said,  ‘Chennai Express’ will create history as most of the morning shows were house full and the youth really loves the film. Word-of-mouth is also growing, especially Deepika Padukone’s comic timing. The music of the film, comic timing and action make this a total masala entertainer. This Eid, SRK will make a clean sweep at the ticket windows.”
