Celebrities who shocked fans with their dark secrets


Celebrities appear to be living a perfect life of luxury and glamour. But at the end of the day, they too are human beings and are not immune to traumas and disorders. There are many ailments that are not easily diagnosed. While many keep the dark secrets closely guarded, some others have spoken up about the sufferings they have undergone.

Here are some celebrities who shocked their fans by revealing that they suffered from mental disorders and other weaknesses at some point of time.

Yo Yo Honey Singh: Popular rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh who thrilled fans with his songs like ‘Blue Eyes’, ‘Chaar Bottle Vodka’, ‘Love Dose’ etc., suddenly went missing in action leaving his fans confused. It was speculated that the singer was being treated in a rehabilitation centre. But Honey has made a come-back with the revelation that he was suffering from bipolar disorder and his addiction to alcohol aggravated the problem. He revealed that he was confined in his house battling the problem and that those 18 months were the darkest phase of his life.

Shama Sikander: Actress Shama Sikander, who grabbed headlines after a long time for her bold performance in short film ‘Sexaholic’, opened up about suffering from bipolar disorder four years ago. In an interview to a leading daily, the ‘Yeh Meri Life Hai’ said, “For one year I did not even know what was happening to me so, I had no idea and I just used to feel very dark, gloomy and sad. I did not know what was the reason behind this, but I felt directionless. I felt hopeless... The feeling was so dark that I would wake up at night and start crying without knowing why I am crying.” She revealed that it was her boyfriend actor-musician Alexx O'Nell, who had a degree in psychology, pointed out that she had the condition.

Deepika Padukone: Reigning queen of Bollywood Deepika Padukone shocked her fans when she revealed that she was suffering from depression and anxiety during the shooting of ‘Happy New Year’. "...One morning, I woke up feeling different. A day earlier, I had fainted due to exhaustion; it was all downhill from there. I felt a strange emptiness in my stomach. I thought it was stress, so I tried to distract myself by focusing on work, and surrounding myself with people. But the nagging feeling didn’t go away. My breath was shallow, I suffered from lack of concentration and I broke down often,” the actress said in an interview. Deepika also said that she consulted psychologists for counselling sessions and also took medication.

Aamir Khan: Superstar Aamir Khan hosts the television show ‘Satyameva Jayate’ that brings to the fore some shocking realities of the society. The actor once revealed that he, along with his team of ‘Satyameva Jayate’ had to undergo group therapies to overcome the hard hitting realities that they came across while shooting for the show. The actor said that he and his team were very disturbed and traumatised due to the harsh realities.

Sanjay Dutt: Actor Sanjay Dutt had undergone some painful phases in his life. The ‘Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.’ actor who was emotionally wrecked following his father actor-politician Sunil Dutt’s demise and his court case, reportedly battled depression in prison. Dutt was very close to his mother Nargis and his life took a turn for the worse when he took to drugs after she passed away. When he realised that his addition was dragging him towards death, he sought his father’s help who sent him to rehabilitation centre in the US.

Manisha Koirala: The Napalese beauty is a cancer survivor. Manisha was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012. But prior to that, she suffered acute clinical depression while she was married to businessman Samrat Dahlal. The ‘1942: A Love Story’ actress opened up on social media about her mental state caused due to matrimonial friction and constant fights. She did not keep the problem under wraps and was open to have suggestive remedies and treatments for the same.  She has come out of the sad phase as a winner.

Hrithik Roshan: One of the top actors of Bollywood, Hrithik Roshan disclosed that he had stammering problems. He spoke about how he was teased as a kid and how he struggled so much to speak fluently. He was also bullied in school for this handicap. “It is one of those handicaps that is made fun of. Especially kids, you can’t blame them but they end up being mean because it looks funny! So the childhood of a person suffering from a problem like this is pure hell. From the time you wake up in the morning to night you almost dread some days …. to wake up! Because you have to go through an entire day when you have to use your speech and have to go through all those little moments of hell,” he said in an interview in 2009. The actor also revealed that he practices speech therapy for fear that he might begin stuttering again.

Parveen Babi: The late actress was the reigning queen of Bollywood during the late 1970s and early 80s. Parveen suddenly disappeared from the movie scene in 1983 when she was at the peak of her career. She allegedly suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and was severely depressed. She is said to have gone to the US to join an ashram for mental peace and tranquillity. She detached herself from all her near and dear ones and died a lonely death due to her mental illness. She was found dead at her Mumbai apartment in 2005 after her neighbours alerted the police that she had not collected milk and newspapers from her doorstep for three days.

Dharmendra: The ‘He-Man’ of Bollywood, Dharmendra was one of the most handsome actors of the industry. But the actor battled depression for 15 years and took to drinking and became an alcoholic. The veteran actor kicked the habit in view of his deteriorating health conditions. He also admitted that the habit destroyed him in the past but he has come to terms with it. "I don't drink these days. I had destroyed myself as an actor with my drinking habit in the past,” the veteran actor was quoted as saying in 2013.
