Box-office of Day 1: ‘Kalank’ beats ‘Kesari’, becomes highest opener of 2019


Karan Johar’s multi-starrer venture ‘Kalank’ turned out to be the highest opener of 2019. The film opened with an average review and earned the love of the audience. ‘Kalank’ earned Rs 21-22 crore nett on day one, which is highest of the year.

‘Kalank’ beats Akshay Kumar’s‘Kesari’ which made Rs 20.40 crore in the opening day.

The BOI report reads, “The film may have got a good opening day number but there seems little for the youth and mass and it will eventually have to be the families and female audience which will have to drive the film. The real value of this initial will only be known in a few days time though the Mahavir Jayanti holiday tends to give a 25% boost but no big film has released on this day in recent past.”

‘Kalank’ has ensemble of star cast like Varun Dhawa, Alia Bhatt, Sonakshi Sinha, Madhuri Dixit, Sanjay Dutt and Aditya Roy Kapur. It is Karan Johar’s dream project which he conceptualized with his late father Yash Johar fifteen years ago. 'Kalank' is helmed by Abhishek Varman. The movie is an epic drama set in the period of 1940s.

Earlier, KJo took to social media to write an emotional post about the film. He wrote, "A film that was born in my heart and mind 15 years ago....a film I passionately believe in...the last film my father worked on before he left us....it was his dream to see this film come through....I couldn't fulfil his dream then....my spirit was broken....but today his wish has found a relationship with celluloid....the story of turbulent relationships and eternal love has found a voice....the film has been woven,nurtured and visualised by ABHISHEK VARMAN....and the film Is KALANK!"
