Box-office: ‘Dangal’ at Rs 29 cr becomes is 2nd highest opener of 2016

Aamir Khan’s first film in a gap of two years ‘Dangal’ opened at theatres on a great note and did superb business at the box-office on its first day. The movie is likely to enter the prestigious Rs 100 crore club by its first weekend.

The sports drama raked in Rs 29.78 crore on its first day, becoming the second highest opening grosser of the year. Salman Khan starrer ‘Sultan’, which also revolves around wrestling, rules the list of the top opening grossers of 2016 at Rs 39.54 crore.

Renowned trade analyst tweeted the figures on Saturday morning. “#Dangal wrestles demonetisation... Sets the BO on fire... Ends the lull phase... Fri ? 29.78 cr [incl ? 59 lacs from Tamil and Telugu],” he wrote.  

In a subsequent tweet, he wrote “#Dangal Sat and Sun biz will be higher... Word of mouth is terrific... Expected to cross ? 100 cr mark in first 3 days... India biz.”

The biopic on Haryanvi wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, who has trained his daughters and Indian women wrestlers Geeta and Babita, released in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil in over 4,300 cinema halls across the country. In the overseas market, it released two days prior in 1000 screens across North America, UAE-GCC, UK and Australia.

Preview screenings were also held in India and the movie has got rave reviews from critics and positive word-of-mouth from audience. 

Directed by Nitish Tiwari, 'Dangal' also stars Fatima Sana Sheikh, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim, Suhani Bhatnagar and Sakshi Tanwar among others and all were great in their performances.
