Box-office: Aamir Khan’s ‘Dangal’ crosses Rs 100 cr in 1st weekend

Confronting the demonitization move, Aamir Khan starrer film ‘Dangal’ has made it to the prestigious Rs 100 crore club with three days of its release itself. Trade pundits had already predicted that the sports drama will cross the figure by the first weekend.

‘Dangal’ opened at theatres on a great note and has been doing superb business at the box-office. The film which became the second highest opener of the year with Rs. 29.78 crore, has already garnered Rs 106.95 by Sunday. The figure includes the collection from the Tamil and Telugu versions as well.

Film critic-cum-trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted, “#Dangal hits CENTURY... Crosses ? 100 cr mark... Sun biz was HUMONGOUS... Smashing RECORDS... Setting new BENCHMARKS...”

He also provided the day-wise collection of the movie with the tweet, “#Dangal Fri 29.78 cr, Sat 34.82 cr, Sun 42.35 cr. Total: ? 106.95 cr [incl Tamil and Telugu]. India biz. FANTABULOUS!”

The movie has also become the first film ever to have crossed the Rs 40 crore mark in a single day. It has become the second highest opening weekend grosser of 2016, after Salman Khan’s ‘Sultan’ which earned Rs. 108.36 during the corresponding time. This is also Aamir’s fifth film to cross the Rs 100 crore mark, after ‘Ghajini’, ‘3 Idiots’ ‘Dhoom 3’ and ‘PK’, which is the highest Bollywood grosser of all time.

‘Dangal’, ditected by Nitish Tiwari and starring Fatima Sana Sheikh and Sanya Malhotra, tells the real story of Haryana-based wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat, who trained his daughters Geeta and Babita Kumari to become world-class wrestlers.
