Bollywood filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi passes away at 64

Noted filmmaker Kalpana Lajmi passed away in Mumbai at the age of 64. Lajmi is known to make women-oriented movies like Rudaali, Chingaari, Ek Pal and Daman. She was unwell for few years and was diagnosed with kidney cancer last year.

She has been undergoing treatment at Mumbai’s Kokilaben hospital. 

Soni Razdan tweeted about the demise of Kalpana Lajmi.

When Ms Lajmi was detected with cancer, several artists from Bollywood including Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Karan Johar, Alia Bhatt, Soni Razdan and Neena Gupta financially helped her out.

Lajmi had been bed-ridden for six months and had been undergoing dialysis every other day. Her medical expenses Rs 2.5 lakhs per month - have been paid mostly through celebrity donations. According to a report in the Quint, “All the medical expenses incurred by Kalpana Lajmi have been taken care of by the Indian Films and Television Directors Association, Aamir Khan and Rohit Shetty.”

Kalpana was the companion of noted Assamese singer Bhupen Hazarika till his death in 2011.
