Bollywood Actors in Hollywood Movies

Bollywood actors are always lured by the thought of making it big in Hollywood. The fame and the big bucks are both too hard to resist. Aishwarya Rai, Om Puri, Irrfan Khan have already made their mark in Hollywood. Amitabh Bacchan, Kareena Kapoor and Bipasha Basu are likely to join the bandwagon soon. Let’s have a look at some of the major achievers in Hollywood from the Hindi film industry.

Aishwarya Rai

Aishwarya Rai: She started her career in the West when she was chosen as a Cannes Jury member after her performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devadas. The almond eyed beauty was chosen as L’Oreal’s brand ambassador in the same year. All this exposure strengthened her contacts in Hollywood. Her most successful venture was Gurinder Chaddha’s Bride and Prejudice. She played the second daughter of a neurotic mother whose only job was to get her daughters marry NRIs. Her next release was Mistress of Spices, which did not go well with the critics. Even though she looked as scintillating as ever, the story was too complex to be interpreted by the lay cine goers. She depicted the character of a pure girl who could communicate with spices and knew the exact purpose of each spice. Everything goes hay wire when she falls in loves and desires a man physically. The much talked about Last Legion was also not very popular here with the Indian audience, though it did a decent business in the West. In Pink Panther 2, she shared screen space with Hollywood biggies like Steve Martin and Alfred Molina. Her character was that of a criminology expert from India who actually turns out to be the burglar who stole the Pink Panther. She rendered a really enjoyable performance. Her future projects include Chaos staring the legendary actor Merryl Streep.

Irrfan Khan

Irrfan Khan: Sometimes referred to as the dark horse of Bollywood; Irrfan Khan has starred in a number of mainstream Hollywood ventures. In The Mighty Heart, he played Angelina Jolie’s husband who was beheaded by the Taliban group. Meera Nair’s ‘The Namesake’ saw him playing the role of Kal Penn’s father (Kal Penn is a renowned Hollywood actor of Gujarati origin). In Danny Boyle’s Oscar winning flick Slumdog Millionaire, he played the tough inspector who interrogates Jamal, who was a contestant in the ‘Who wants to be a millionaire?’ show. Jamal raised eyebrows when he was able to answer every single question being asked in the show even though he was brought up in the Dharavi slums. Khan shows his soft side and lets Jamal go back and finish the game show after listening to his story. He also starred as a police officer in Jennifer Lynch’s Hiss which also starred Mallika Sherawat and Divya Dutt. He will soon be seen as the villain in the next Spiderman movie.

Anil Kapoor

Anil Kapoor: Slumdog Millionaire also reminds us of the memorable performance of Anil Kapoor. He played the sinister game show host who gets Jamal arrested. He was recently seen in Mission Impossible 4 Ghost Protocol alongside Tom Cruise. He is slowly becoming a known face in Hollywood.

Mallika Sherawat

Mallika Sherawat: She was the protagonist in the Irrfan Khan starrer ‘Hiss’ where she played the role of a humanoid snake or an ‘Icchadhari Naagin’ searching for her abducted mate. The character she says was challenging and her director Jennifer Lynch was all in praises for her. The film however could not even do an average business and turned out to be a complete flop. Her first foray in Hollywood can be considered in Jackie Chan’s ‘The Myth’ where her screen presence was for about 20 seconds.
