Bollywood actor Mehmood dies in America

MehmoodLegendary comedian Mehmood passed away on Friday in Pennsylvania, US, where he had been staying for medical treatment. He was 72 and had been ailing for a long time.
According to family sources, his body will either be brought back to Mumbai or Bangalore, where he had been...
...living for the last few years.

The king of comedy, who first entered the film industry to earn some money, went unnoticed in films like Do Bigha Zameen and Pyaasa. Then came films like Sasural, Humrahi, Johar Mehmood in Goa, Pyar Kiye Jaa and Padosan. By the late sixties, he had become a superstar. The 'heroes' those days would be reluctant to work with him as he ended up stealing the limelight.

Mehmood also promoted actors like Amitabh Bachchan by giving him a lead role in his production Bombay to Goa. In a career spanning three decades, he worked in over 150 films.

Several of Mehmood's co-stars condoled his death. Said Shammi Kapoor: "Mehmood was a class apart. His style had less of slapstick. He was very innovative and had a great sense of timing that gave him an edge over the others. It was fun and an honour to work with him.”

Sunil Dutt, who acted with Mehmood in Padosan, said: "I have lost a very good friend. He was a great human being.”

Actor Jeetendra said Mehmood had a great box-office value. “I acted with him in Humjoli and he was an absolute riot. He had three roles in the film — the grandfather, son and grandson and I don't think anyone else has been able to play anything similar after that. We used to call him bhaijaan. It’s a big personal loss to me,” he said.
