Juhi Chawla – Five memorable films of the Bollywood beauty


Bollywood actress Juhi Chawla turned 48 on Thursday, November 13. The bubbly actress who ruled the silver screen during the 1990s, has already spent almost two decades in Bollywood. She has also worked in regional films like Punjabi, Malayalam, Tamil Telugu and Bengali. A former Miss India, Juhi is known for her versatility, amazing comic timing and vivacious on-screen persona. Although she is mostly known for commercial cinema, in later stage of her career, she has also worked in some off-beat films.

Juhi has also taken to producing films under Red Chillies Entertainment. She co-owns Kolkata Knight Riders franchise of Indian Premiere League, along with her husband and fellow actor Shah Rukh Khan. She is happily married to industrialist Jay Mehta and the couple has two children – daughter Jhanvi and son Arjun.

On the occasion of her birthday, here are five memorable movies of her Bollywood career.

Gulaab Gang: Juhi who had been appearing in guest roles for some time, made a comeback in a full-fledged role with this women-centric film. The 2014 directorial by Soumik Sen cast her as an antagonist against her former ‘rival’ Madhuri Dixit. The film was a critical success and is regarded as the best film of Juhi’s career. She also got a nomination for Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award.

Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak: This romantic tragedy on the lines of Shakesphere’s play ‘Romeo and Juliet’ which released in 1988 was a blockbuster. Juhi starred opposite Aamir Khan and the two actors shared amazing on-screen chemistry. It also fetched her first Filmfare Award. The movie was also remade in Telugu as ‘Akkada Ammayi Ikkaa Abbayi’.

Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke: Juhi was once again paired opposite Aamir Khan in this romantic comedy by Mahesh Bhatt. The film which released in 1993 was a runaway hit and Juhi bagged the Filmfare Award for Best Actress for her performance. The soundtrack of the film was a chartbuster of that time.

Darr: This Yash chopra thriller that released in 1993 was a major critical and commercial success and won the Nation Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. Juhi gave a memorable performance as Kiran who is caught between one man’s love and other man’s obsession. The film starred Sunny Deola and Shah Rukh Khan who played a negative role.

Yes Boss: Diricted by Aziz Mirza in 1997, the film starred superstar Shah Rukh Khan opposite Juhi. She played the role of an ambitious but vulnerable model who gets trapped in blind love for a lustful womanizer played by Aditya Pancholi. Juhi got nominated for Filmfare Best Actress Award. The music of the film was also a big hit.
